Anchoring & Posidonia Protection
Posidonia Oceanica is the lung of the Mediterranean Sea and the reason behind the legendary transparency of Mallorca's waters. As sailors, protecting this ecosystem is both an ecological duty and a strict legal requirement.
1. What is Posidonia Oceanica and why is it vital?
Contrary to popular belief, Posidonia is not seaweed, but a marine plant with flowers, fruits, and roots. Its meadows hold marine sediment, prevent beach erosion during winter storms, and produce huge amounts of oxygen. In addition, they are the habitat and nursery for hundreds of species of fish and marine organisms.
2. How to anchor safely on sand in Southeast Mallorca
A dragging anchor can destroy in a few seconds Posidonia meadows that took centuries to grow. For a responsible and safe anchorage:
- Visual Identification: From the boat deck, meadows look like dark green spots in the water. Sand has a light turquoise blue color. You must drop your anchor strictly in light-colored sandy areas.
- Anchor Double Check: Once anchored, put on your diving mask and check that both the anchor and the chain are resting entirely on the sandy seabed.
3. Fines, ecological buoys, and anchoring surveillance
In the Balearic Islands, Decree 56/2018 strictly regulates the protection of this plant. Daily surveillance boats equipped with skippers and divers inspect anchoring sites. Sanctions for anchoring on Posidonia are very heavy:
- Minor offenses: Fines from €150 to €3,000 for negligence without severe damage.
- Severe or very severe offenses: Fines can rise up to €30,000 or more in the case of severe damage caused by larger boats.
- Ecological buoys: In highly protected bays, ecological buoy fields are available. Using them avoids the need to drop anchor and is mandatory where present.
📱 Useful Tools for Sailors
The Balearic Islands Government provides the official portal Protecció Posidonia and the 'Posidonia Maps' mobile app. Using live GPS, it shows whether you are on a permitted sandy seabed or on protected meadows. It is a must-have resource for every captain.
