Sailing Routes from Portocolom: From Cala Varques to Cala Mondragó
Setting sail from the natural port of Portocolom, in the southeast of Mallorca, is opening the door to one of the most beautiful sailing coastlines in the Balearic Islands. This historic port of Felanitx, naturally sheltered from the prevailing winds, is the perfect starting point for planning memorable coastal voyages. Whether you have a high-power speedboat or have decided to venture out with one of our rental boats without a license, the east coast offers two opposite and complementary routes that combine wild nature, limestone cliffs, and paradisiacal white sand beaches.
In this guide, we detail the two star sailing routes to make the most of your day at sea.
🧭 North Route: Heading to Cala Varques and the Virgin Cliffs
This route runs in a northerly direction, hugging the coastline of Felanitx and Manacor, an area characterized by low cliffs crowned with pine trees and spectacular sea caves:
- Point of Interest 1: Cala Brafi and Cala Marçal: Upon leaving the port, we cross Cala Brafi, a small pristine corner excellent for a quiet first swim.
- Point of Interest 2: Cova del Pont and Cala Varques: Sailing about 4.8 nautical miles, the coastline becomes wilder. We will approach the spectacular Cova del Pont, a natural rock bridge sculpted by the sea. Finally, we will anchor in Cala Varques, a turquoise haven of peace with clean sandy bottoms 5 meters deep, ideal for snorkeling and discovering the local marine life.
🧭 South Route: Heading to Cala Sa Nau and the Mondragó Natural Park
To the south, the landscape softens, offering narrow and sheltered coves of great renown, culminating in a protected natural park:
- Point of Interest 1: Cala Sa Nau and Cala Mitjana: Narrow coves that penetrate sinuously into the land, offering transparent waters sheltered from the outside wind. They are perfect for anchoring and relaxing.
- Point of Interest 2: Mondragó Natural Park: Sailing south about 6.5 miles, we cross Portopetro until we enter the pristine beaches of Mondragó (Cala Mondragó and S'Amarador). This protected park offers a dream family anchorage on a bottom of fine white sand, surrounded by dunes and pine forests.

💡 The Advice of Our Expert Skipper
"When planning either of the two sailing routes from Portocolom, it is imperative to check the local weather forecast from AEMET in the morning. If the wind blows from the east (Llevant), the southeast coast becomes uncomfortable due to direct swell. On those days, I advise sailing at reduced speed, staying close to the natural shelter of the cliffs, and prioritizing highly sheltered anchorages inside Cala Sa Nau."
